YIN YANG: A new perspective on culture

The Inaugural International Conference on Yin Yang Paradigm
Stockholm University School of Business
June 7-11, 2012

Conference Chair: Professor Tony Fang, Stockholm University School of Business

OBJECTIVE
The objective of the conference is twofold: First, to discuss how to adopt Yin Yang—a holistic, dynamic, and dialectical paradigm—as an alternative to Hofstede’s paradigm to understand the dynamics of culture and cross-cultural management in the age of globalisation; Next, to discuss how to use Yin Yang as a paradigmatic platform to unite various initiatives on the study of culture and to foster interdisciplinary research for theory building and practice.

TASK
The following questions are to be discussed: (1) How to conceptualize culture in the age of globalisation; (2) How to rewrite each national culture and its behaviors in business, management, leadership, communication, and negotiation from a Yin Yang perspective; (3) How to conduct qualitative case studies in this project; (4) How to quantify and compare national cultures in the Yin Yang paradigm? and (5) How to build up a research community for knowledge and experience sharing among researchers interested in the Yin Yang paradigm.

ORGANISATION
To maximize the discussions of each conference paper on each national culture only one session is organized at the conference. The first part of the conference will take place in Stockholm during June 7-8, 2012. The final part of the same conference will be held in Mora in a typical Swedish countryside environment by the Lake of Siljan. A detailed logistics instruction is to be given in a separate document.

CONFERENCE PAPER
Latest by May 18, 2012, each participant (or her/his team) shall in close collaborations with Tony Fang finish writing a conference paper (a work-in-progress draft; about 60% done) on an assigned national culture. Mid-term ongoing quality check is to be conducted on March 20 and April 18, respectively. A detailed academic instruction is given in a separate document.

PARTICIPANTS
About forty researchers (mostly under the age of 36) from 33 countries have been selected from more than 140 applicants from 48 countries to participate in the first phase of this Yin Yang project. The selected researchers come from a variety of disciplines such as economics, management, business, leadership, communication, political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, communication, linguistics, journalism, film making, nursing, and so on.
