What does internationalisation mean?

- It means that we are working towards introducing a multicultural approach into our study programmes and our research. We would like to offer students the opportunity to study in an international environment and cultural thrust in a range of different ways, for example by involving a wide variety of undergraduate and doctoral students, lecturers and researchers. Of course, our exchanges with other universities throughout the world play an important role in promoting internationalisation. We are taking active steps to ensure that the best universities in the world are our partners.

Why is international experience important?

- I would like to encourage all students to study abroad if they have the opportunity, not just because it is an enjoyable thing to do, but also in order to broaden their perspectives and give them the chance to benchmark their ideas with those of others. I believe going abroad is the best possible way to experience a different environment that is enriching in many different ways. It gives students a new outlook and a more objective approach. It also gives them opportunities to make valuable contacts.

Appreciating freedom and creativity at work

When asked whether he enjoys his work at the School of Business, Ali replies:
- Of course it is enjoyable, otherwise I would not do it. I really value the freedom I have in my job and the opportunity to be involved in and influence what is going on around me. Something else which makes my job worthwhile is when one of my doctoral students attends a viva voce as the final stage of their doctoral thesis. So far, I have been a supervisor or joint supervisor of about 10 doctoral students who have gone through the entire process of working towards their doctorate. Seeing how each individual develops and learns is very exciting. Some students' lives change completely during their research period, and it is very rewarding to be part of their journey.
