The number of non-European students who applied to one of the international master’s programmes at Stockholm University for autumn semester 2012 has increased by more than 50 percent compared to the previous year. The most popular subject area for international master’s students is business – three of the master’s programmes at the Stockholm University School of Business are among the seven most popular master’s programmes in Sweden.

The number of non-European students who applied to one of the international master’s programmes at Stockholm University for autumn semester 2012 has increased by more than 50 percent compared to the previous year, when tuition fees were first introduced for non-European students.
The most popular subject area for international master’s students is business . Three of the master’s programmes at the School of Business - Consumer & Business Marketing, Banking and Finance/Financial Economics and Management Studies - are among the seven most popular master’s programmes in Sweden.
Increased number of non-European applicants
Last year saw a big drop in applications by non-European students following the introduction of tuition fees for students from outside the EA/EEA and Switzerland. This year, however, there has been a substantial increase in the number of non-European applicants, up more than 50% compared to the previous year.
- This is gratifying evidence that the quality of programmes at Stockholm University are of a high international standard and that our University is a priority choice among international students, despite the introduction of tuition fees. It is also evidence that our recent recruitment efforts have been successful, says Lena Gerholm Pro Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University.
The total number of students applying to the University from countries outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland was 4,664, whilst the corresponding figure last year was 3,015. Students from China, Bangladesh, USA and Ethiopia account for a large number of this year's applications.
The number of international students applying for master’s programmes at Stockholm University for autumn 2012 has increased by 30 percent compared to last year. A new development this year is the increase in the number of applicants from the United Kingdom, which now accounts for the largest share of European applicants. In total, 6,444 international students worldwide have applied to master’s programmes at Stockholm University, compared to 4,949 in 2011.
